Kristen graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in astrophysics in 2016. There she found her passion for optics and space instrumentation via various research terms and the student group AlbertaSat. In 2018 she completed her MSc in Earth and Space science at York University where she developed laser spectroscopy technologies for planetary exploration applications, and co-founded Wyvern, an Alberta-based earth observation startup where she now acts as the Chief Science Officer. She has since started her PhD in quantum optics at the University of Toronto, working on space-based optical clock systems for gravitational wave detection. She has experience in quantum optics, x-ray instrumentation, optical design, laser systems, and laser spectroscopy. She has won numerous prestigious awards including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Vanier and Alexander Graham Bell scholarships and an NSERC CREATE Fellowship in Technologies and Techniques for Earth and Space Exploration. In her spare time she volunteers on the Board of Directors for Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) Canada as Projects Chair, where she works with the Canadian Space Agency, the National Research Council of Canada, and other partners to train the future space workforce via experiential learning opportunities for post-secondary students.

If you would like to learn more about Kristen’s work, you can find her on LinkedIn and you can go to the Wyvern website ( to learn all about her start-up company and its goal in the space industry.
